Distance Ed? 13 Easy Steps to Success
Studies show that students in virtual classrooms score higher than those in traditional classrooms. But it’s all up to you. UC411 asked educators and students for their inside tips, and here’s what they told us.

  • Familiarize yourself with the course material.

  • Set specific goals to complete a certain amount of material by a certain time. This will encourage you to stay on some type of schedule.

  • Make sure that your study area is ready and comfortable.

  • Avoid interruptions and distractions.

  • Find study buddies. Interacting with other students will encourage you to stay active with your own plan of action and meet your goals.

  • Discover what time is the best time for you to study. You may find that you are more alert at certain times of the day or evening. You want to make the most of your study time.

  • If possible take a prerequisite course before the preliminary course. This will give you a chance to get familiarize yourself with distance learning.

  • Develop good reading habits. Make sure to read chapter summaries and to take notes.

  • Share notes with other students if possible.

  • Keep notes of the questions you need to ask the instructor to save time. Stay in touch with your instructor. Discuss your progress.

  • When scheduling tests make sure to pick a time when you have had ample time to study and learn the material.

  • Learn to communicate in an effective manner. Know when to ask for help and when to try to find the answer yourself.

  • Take time during the week to do something for yourself and leave the books behind. It is important to stay focused and take care of your mental health, especially if you are juggling family, work, and school.
