Storytelling emphasized in new digital game
design program at Centennial College this fall
Prompted by the explosive growth of the digital game design industry worldwide, The Centre for Creative Communications at Centennial College is adding a full-time program in Game Design + Development to its roster of communications, media and design programs this fall.
Developed by game artists and industry professionals, the program’s project-based curriculum will be complemented by an eight-week industry field placement. Students will also make use of industry-standard 3D software and game engines at the college’s mid-Toronto campus.
“As the unprecedented growth of the game design industry in Canada and around the world continues to revolutionize contemporary media and entertainment, new career opportunities are emerging for artists and imaginative thinkers,” says Nate Horowitz, dean of the School of Communications, Media and Design.
“Toronto is a fantastic place for game designers. This program will focus on the creative and the storytelling aspects of the next generation of games, while providing hands-on technical skills training in our game labs,” he says. Centennial faculty have contributed to a number of games on the market, such as Full Auto, The Warriors and Monster Federation.
Students will work both individually and in collaboration to complete a series of projects, culminating in the creation of their own game-level project that can be used for their professional portfolios. The post-secondary program is two years in duration.
