Marketing experience pays off for Carrot Top
Carrot Top is known for his lightning speed energy, trademark orange hair, and incredibly funny props that redefine what can be done on stage. Last week, Carrot Top invaded Toronto 's Massey Hall. What he didn't include in his trunk full of comedic props, was his college degree. However if you ask him, it is an important part of his act. Carrot Top grew up in Cocoa Beach , FLA. He was a surfer growing up in his laid back beach town environment. He then enrolled in Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton in South Florida where he pursued a degree in marketing. His roommates though he was funny and encouraged him to perform at an open mic night. Carrot Top's simple routine of some old jokes went over well. He had so much fun that he had to come back.
There are so many comedians out there, but when people think of Carrot Top, his image is differentiated, He has created an identification able brand which was helped by his study of marketing. “My comic friends always joke that I had a logo before I had an act, it was true! I had this little logo and these T-shirts printed up and I didn't even have an act, I was just Carrot Top. The marketing degree paid of for sure. Some people say it was a waste of a degree, but I say it's quite the opposite, like you say I created a brand.”
Carrot Top continues to delight audiences across the continent with his rock n' roll-type show. “I always used to watch comics and used to think that there shows needed more energy like a rock concert would have. With their T-shirts and loud music; that's what I tried to do with my comedy was making it more of a concert feel rather than just watching someone talk on stage.” The best career advice Carrot Top received was from comedian Buddy Hackett. “The key to the treasure is the treasure.” According to Carrot Top this means, “Enjoy what you're doing, and enjoy living. That's the key to success. It's so simple but really just live every day, and the key to what we're doing, is what we're doing. I think a lot of times we get wrapped up so much. Sometime I don't even appreciate how hard I have worked, and how far I have come. One day it hits me and I go on stage and think that, and I will have the best show. I try to think of that more than anything, just to enjoy everything.”
His advice to young people who dream of success: “If you work as hard as you can towards you dream and keep a positive attitude, you will achieve it … There's something that no one can take away, and they are you dreams and your hard work.” Audiences, who missed Carrot Top in January, can catch his DVD entitled, Carrot Top Rocks Las Vegas or visit www.carrottop.com for more information.
