The high cost of living in Toronto often comes as a shock to students that migrate to the city at the beginning of every school year. Toronto has a lot to offer. However, most things come with a price tag, and a student's spending limit does not accommodate pricey purchases or costly nights out. Although being broke has become synonyms with being a student, it doesn't mean students can't have fun and take advantage of this city's offerings, all the while maintaining a budget. First of all, students should make sure they always carry there student discount card, so they can take advantage of student prices or discounts. Secondly, there is much to do in Toronto , for either a small fee or no charge. It just take a little extra time to dig around and find out “What's On,” the phrase TTC has coined to promote events through the city.

The TTC is a great place to search for inexpensive fun. Either grab a pamphlet while riding the subway or check out www.ttc.ca , and click on “what's on” for information concentrating events. This is one of many sites that promote Toronto 's street fairs, festivals and exhibitions. The Royal Ontario Museum ( www.rom.on.ca ) at the corner of Bloor St. and Avenue Rd., offers free admission on special exhibits. You can also catch a concert next door with many of University of Toronto 's Faculty of Music performances ( www.utoronto.ca/music ) or at the Royal Ontario Conservatory of Music ( www.rcmusic.ca ) Check out their website for dates and times and for cost of admission. Afterwards, why not hit a pub or coffee shop for a pint or a cup of java and people watch? When the weather is more favorable, make sure to take advantage of the many patios that line our city streets.

Or if you're the more active type, why not put on your walking shoes and take a walk through one of Toronto 's many unique neighborhoods. Toronto has numerous fantastic neighborhoods all with their own charm and appeal. One that you don' want to miss out on is The Beaches ;( www.beachestoronto.com ). Located on Queen ST. E. (east of Woodbine and south to Lake Ontario), this area is full of people during the summer months, when you will find beach volleyball, swimming, roller blading, biking, tanning, and free outdoor concerts. A few other fabulous Toronto neighborhoods to take note of include: Queen St. W. (west of University Ave. ) where there are plenty of interesting shops to check out, the St. Lawrence Market, ( www.stlawrencemarket.com ) where you will find a selection of goods including food, crafts, clothes, and accessories.

The Toronto Islands are worth a visit, too. ( www.city.toronto.on.ca/parks/island ). You can spend the day there lounging on the beach, paddle boating, swimming, picnicking, bike riding, and roller blading. Toronto is what you make of it, so take advantage of any free time you have and explore!
